lyrics

Mother's in the kitchen
in 1947
listening to a program
and cutting up an orange
and the band is playing Stardust
the band is playing Stardust

Nana's making pancakes
in her Maple Street apartment
she's whistling over batter
in a big bowel
children, watch the hot stove
children, watch the hot stove

--every child knows
that pancakes on the stove
make a child grow

fathers watching tv
in 1957
he's drinking a beer
and Lawrence Welk has a big band
god, that awful music
god, that awful music

i'm getting out of highschool
in 1959
i'm going on to art school
to make a lot a' paintings
the old folks don't like it
the old folks don't like it

__ but every child knows
that pancakes on the stove
make a child grow
