Track Name: the Raft
when i make
a song
and the words
the words won't come
i wait
i try to wait
for something to happen

the cold war
was a game
that we
that we all used to play
like hide and go seek
it was better than nothing

when i dance
on the world
i can see
the boys and girls
spinning like tops
on the hand of God

- life on a raft
there's not a lot a room here
but i can see the shore
this raft will take me anywhere
- i'm writing a poem
a message in a bottle
i'll drop it in the deep sea
it will get to shore ahead of me

water falls
on the ground
sometimes
sometimes you feel down
but the band
the next band in the show
is fantastic

when i make
a song
and the words
the words won't come
i try
i try to wait
for something to happen
Track Name: Mexico City
i lived in a house... in San Francisco
every day I'd go out.. for coffee
and I'd walk down.. to Golden Gate Park
just to look at...the green trees.

and i was stranded ..in Mexico City
cause my flight was canceled...i forgot to confirm it
so i went to see..
Diego Rivera
he had Mural in town.. about the revolution

and i remember .. i went down to DC
we all gathered around.. the Pentagon
and president Nixon.. was having a party
but we were ones.. protecting America

but we were young ..and beautiful
we lived in a house .. in Connecticut
Track Name: Soung About Time
it's water under a bridge
as i look across time
Saturn has moons
and Shakespeare had rhymes

through all of the tears
and rock-n-roll rides
i sat on the bank
of that little river

-- who would be leave
the stars still come out at night
and the rain comes down
when the rain comes down

and i have to laugh
at the Sun in the sky
and the music keeps coming
keeps coming

all of the times i got
drunk and too stoned
and i wanderer the streets
till morning

i cried for my self
like a boy with no home
that was not
that was not a solution

--you can fill up a lake with the
tears from your face
and come to a tragic conclusion

but in stead of your tears
you can open your ears
cause this tower of Babel makes music

this tower of Babel makes music
Track Name: Blue Umbrella
red lives fall, to the sidewalk, on a rainy night
traffic's backed up, a driver says, hey get out of the way
it's 1 in the morning
the night's just beginning

cabs pull up, to the door of, club 45
a door man, with a blue umbrella, he'l take you inside
what's on the agenda, Ted?
has Gladys White started singing yet?

i walk up to the bar, at club 45
i look around, hey this place, would make a great song
hey John i'l have whiskey
what up with your band, where are you playing?

i'm a little drunk, after 2 hours. i saw a few friends
hey Ted call me a taxi, i think i'l go home
the music was delicious
Gladys white had me in tears tonight

red lives fall, to the sidewalk, on a rainy night
traffic's backed up, a driver says, hey get out of the way
it's 3 in the morning
the night's just beginning
Track Name: Bread & Roses
i used to go down... to Elm City
the tables were round..and kids.. made coffee
Eddy D. was a boy, with beautiful eyes
we sat on the Green with a bottle of wine, and talked about.. new times

morning to night i talked to my friends ..in winter it was...warm in there
..........the flag on the window.. said.. don't tread on me
the coffee was hot and beautiful boys ..talked to me
about Vietnam..the political mess..in Washington

i used to go down.. to Elm City
the tables were round..and kids.. made coffee
so don’t tread on us ...don’t tread on us
no don’t tread on us...don’t tread on us
Track Name: deKooning
when i think of big words
like longevity and fame
and history and the art-world
and personality and great
when i think of big words
like longevity and fame
when i think of big words
like hero and great

million dollar paintings
in billion dollar mansions
i'm screaming in the great museum
looking for looking for the answers
looking for looking for the answers
in a studio in the Hamptons
Jay Gatsby in the water
deKooning can't remember

when i think of big words
like longevity and fame
and history and the art-world
and personality and great
when i think of big words
like longevity and fame
when i think of big words
like hero and great
Track Name: Consolation Prize
remember the little boy i found
he was throwing everybody's stuff around
i said, Michael how can we be friends
if your gona' throw my stuff around

a child in the after-school
said "i wana to go home wit' chew"
Michael, you have a family
see ya' tomorrow at the after-school

--this is where i'm sposed' to sing
something wise, a consolation prize
about memories made of this
about memories made of this

on his birthday we went to
visit the elephants at the Bronx Zoo
my street fighter turned into
a perfect gentleman (i was amazed)

the last time i saw Michael at the after school
we all played baseball in the afternoon
8 years old, and nothing to loose
he said, "give me a dolla', Mr Ed".

--this is where i'm sposed' to sing
something wise, a consolation prize
about memories made of this
about memories made of this
Track Name: White Buildings
white buildings on the horizon
orange clouds and a sky blue sun
the little child holds rainbow crayons
makes pictures that shine like, shine like

young musician lives in the city
serves coffee to make the rent
but when he plays he makes a rainbow
all the colors that shine like, shine like

kids play football in the play ground
like to laugh and fool around
but after school john makes a rainbow
when he dances, when he dances

white spires on the horizon
orange clouds and a sky blue sun
the little child holds rainbow crayons
makes pictures that shine like, shine like
Track Name: What Every Child Knows
Mother's in the kitchen
in 1947
listening to a program
and cutting up an orange
and the band is playing Stardust
the band is playing Stardust

Nana's making pancakes
in her Maple Street apartment
she's whistling over batter
in a big bowel
children, watch the hot stove
children, watch the hot stove

--every child knows
that pancakes on the stove
make a child grow

fathers watching tv
in 1957
he's drinking a beer
and Lawrence Welk has a big band
god, that awful music
god, that awful music

i'm getting out of highschool
in 1959
i'm going on to art school
to make a lot a' paintings
the old folks don't like it
the old folks don't like it

__ but every child knows
that pancakes on the stove
make a child grow
Track Name: Making an Island
butterflies in the trees
sunlight comes through the leaves
to caresses the dirty face
of a little boy on the beach

making a castle of sand
a yellow shovel and pale
he carries water from the sea
he carries water from the sea

light from a street lamp shines
on the sidewalk below
making an island of light
making an island in the night

and all i can remember
we could have stayed there forever
till mama called come in here
till mama called come in here

Long Island Sound is a calm body of water
some days you could see Long Island
on the blue line of the horizon
and the sound of tiny waves on the shore line

and the cold wind of winter
blue in the face of a boy as he walked there
he was wandering if he could paint that
he was wandering if he could paint that
