White Noise
04:09
|
|||
water flowed under a bridge
i sat on the bank by a rushing river
i drink my beer, made a paper boat...
put it in the water
who knows the secret name of ashes
telescopes and rusting watches
what wind will blow through mountain passes
passengers on ships that pass us
white slaves.. black slaves
black slaves
white sails- on the waves
i walked down the hill to Somerville
got a Balintine Ale to drink by the water
i sat on the bank, made paper boat
watch my boat float down the river
white noise is playing on a radio
somewhere near the junior high school
the noisy water laughs like sorrow
laughs like sorrow,,laughs like sorrow
white slaves.. black slaves
black slaves
white sails- on the waves
who knows the secret name of ashes
telescopes and rusting watches
what wind will blow through mountain passes
passengers on ships that pass us

Eagle Scouts
04:26
|
|||
Saturday
baseball games
little towns
know nothing's news
paper flies around
the pitcher's mounds
high school boys
in a little town
wings on air
just like eagle scouts
boys that have no doubts
boys in love
jump from clefts above
jump from cliffs
...news on the radio
and paper telephones..
the boys were swell
the Korean War
soldiers fell
and war was hell
on a merry-go-round
going round and round
going round and round
boys in cars
drive around the town
in 1952
boys with jobs
"can i wash your windshield, sir?"
might be President.
...news on the radio
and paper telephones..

Happiness Is
03:46
|
|||
happiness
is a simple thing
they walked along the board walk
look out to sea
the flight of gulls
two guys in love
a boy on a horse
in the distance
some distant thunder
over by the hills
a distant rumble
from the highway
we drove into town
to look for a stereo
but the store was closed
cause it was Sunday
back to the beach
those guys were still walking there
completely oblivious
of terrible times in the New York Times
over in the town
they were getting out of church
kids were running around
in there Sunday best
hey John come on over
we'll have a beer
and listen to my new records
and listen to my new records

Little Clouds
04:39
|
|||
all water falls, down into lakes. lakes and oceans.
warm air rises, to the clouds, ...rises to the clouds.
and i am riding in an air-o-plane ..looking down.
terracotta, viridian, and little clouds dance in the wind
Judy was a lonely child
she danced all day and wept at night
she saw a movie about pain
just like Judy,s. Judy run away
but don't cry Judy, it's not a move
you can't just run away, to join the crusade
Taliban and nation states, insane men rise from the ranks
Politician's calculations, corrupt morticians hold elections
and all falls down..like rain from clouds, but hopeful kids rise from the south
and terracotta, viridian, and little clouds, dance in the wind

in New York City
i knew a boy
who was amazing
his name was Maybe
Maybe's mom
was not a lady
she put him
out on the sidewalk
hey gay boy
your not my baby
he was 14
he was lonely
a lonely boy in New York City
in the East Village
i knew a boy
who liked to pick up
old men with money
hay old man
don't you think i'm pretty
we'll go down
to the old town
i know a bar there
we'll have some fun there
and later
we can make it
one hundred dollars
for the hour
and later, Maybe
met a Brooklyn boy
who liked him
he played piano
and wrote a song
for Maybes birthday
it was about two boys
one named Maybe
one named Crazy
and later
we can make it
boys make love in
New York City

the Bridge
03:38
|
|||
over the bridge at Calico
i was wondering where to go
i brought guitar and a rainbow
to start a new life in Calico
all the good people of Calico
pray to Jesus and Hank Snow
God is vengeful, but Jesus knows
all of the songs that Americans know
walking in the snow
singing Christmas Carols
talking on the phone
we got a new computer
in Summer it shines and in winter it snows
and the River Rhine flows through Calico
Christ is kind and children know
stay away from the border with Mexico
Jimmy got a car for Christmas
shooting the bad guys in a new game
there's a terrible story.... on the tv
there's a terrible story... on the tv
over the bridge at Calico
i was wondering where to go
i brought guitar and a rainbow
to start a new life in Calico

Water Water
03:37
|
|||
see the lighthouse on the island
a great ship on the horizon
water water, fish and lion
water water, fish and lion
all along the coast the broken
soldiers on the beach are dying
in the sky the wind is laughing
in my mind a child is crying
see the planes and hear the sirens
see the smoke on the horizon
on the rocks the ship is broken
in the sky a child is crying
water water, fish and lion
water water, fish and lion
water water, fish and lion
see the planes and hear the sirens
see the lighthouse on the island
a great ship on the horizon
soldiers on the beach are dying
in the sky a child is crying
water water, blue and silver
soldiers dying, fish and lion
hear the waves along the shore line
see the smoke on the horizon
see the lighthouse on the island
a great ship on the horizon
water water, fish and lion
water water, fish and lion

the Life That Lets Us
05:28
|
|||
Winter comes, but once a year
we walk through snow, out to the lake
ice fishermen, drop lines of hope
into the freezing water
Richard Penn was an upright soul
who preached to the congregation
he knew what men and women know
kindness can save a nation
come and watch the silver snow
falling in the evening
and in the morning a blue sky
and the cold air sparkles
Winter Winter comes and goes
like the life that makes us
all the children of the earth
dance when Spring trees blossom
all along the silver shore
children build sand castles
but castles fall into the sea
like all great states and nations
Richard Penn stood erect
standing at the lectern
his kind eyes could see the end
of the life that lets us
but tell me child what do you know
can you see the mountains
and the valley white with snow
and the city shining
and Richard Penn was an upright soul
who preached to the congregation
he knew what men and women know
kindness can save a nation 12/14
